In a stunning diplomatic overture, US President Donald Trump met with interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, and urged him to pursue normalisation of ties with Israel. Trump said al-Sharaa had agreed to join the Abraham Accords and eventually recognise Israel, but Syria hasn't confirmed that. Trump in his speech in Riyadh on Tuesday expressed hope that Saudi Arabia would soon join the Abraham Accords and recognise Israel, while acknowledging that it would do so in its own time.
