Paper Cup Mosaic Is A Tribute To 'People's President' APJ Abdul Kalam

New Delhi: Over 160 students of Coimbatore's Camford International School came together to create a mosaic depicting former President APJ Abdul Kalam's face on Thursday - using paper cups. A staggering 2.35 lakh disposable paper cups - in four different colours - were used to create the unique mosaic. The students hope to set a Guinness World Record for the largest-ever paper cup mosaic. They say they want to create more awareness about the importance of using environmentally friendly products and materials and help save the environment.

The mosaic took around four hours to make, with 167 students from Grades 6 to 11 participating. The event began at 6.30 am and concluded at 10.30 am in the presence of eight surveyors, witnesses and stewards, appointed by the Camford International School as per Guinness guidelines. The mosaic was created over an area of 981 square-metres.

Poongothai Arul Ramesh, an official from the school, says that their affidavits along with a video recording of the event will now be sent to Guinness as proof.

"This is our second Guinness attempt. The first one was in 2013 when students made the largest postcard mosaic of a tiger using 35,000 postcards on the theme "Save the Tiger," Ms Ramesh says.

The existing record of the largest paper cup mosaic was set in Lucknow in April last year, where a Vodafone logo was created using 1.40 lakh paper cups in a 627 square-metre area in 4 hours and 15 minutes.
