In order to make health a priority, having a solid morning routine is essential

Let's be honest - adulting is hard. Waking up every morning, day after day, earlier than you'd like in order to meet all your deadlines and finish your chores for the day, is probably one of the worst things you just have to do as a responsible adult. But here's the thing, in order to make health and self-care a priority, having a solid morning routine is essential. No matter how much you might dread the morning, it is what can set the tone for the rest of your day, and some might argue, the rest of your life. Starting your day on a healthy, positive note is essential to having a day, and subsequently a life, that is productive and happy.

Here are a few things you can do in the morning to feel healthier and happier.

1. Listen to your alarm

You might be tempted to set your alarm on snooze as soon as you hear it ring, but that's what will cause all the delays and stresses for the day. Instead, listen to your alarm. Open your eyes and jump out of bed as soon as your alarm rings, thus forcing your body to wake up and get active. All you need is that initial push and then you're set. A great way to ensure you get out of bed as soon as your alarm rings, is by placing your alarm a little away from your bed at night. Place your alarm somewhere where it is clearly audible, but you still have to get out of bed to turn it off.

2. Stretch

Stretching is a great way to awaken your mind and warm your body up for the rest of the day. Lying down on a bed for hours at a stretch can stiffen the body up and cause you to feel more lazy or tired at times. Stretching is a great way to kick your senses into a more alert mode. Plus, if you're going to be sitting on a desk for the rest of the day, this initial stretching in the morning will prove very helpful in the long run as well.

3. Eat a filling, healthy breakfast

Skipping breakfast can often lead to a junk food binge later on in the day. So make sure you eat a breakfast that is filling and replete with foods rich in nutrients. Avoid eating a breakfast full of saturated fats or only full of carbohydrates. Opt instead for a protein rich breakfast that will keep you feeling satiated for longer and help you avoid overeating.
