Mumbai Rains Live Updates: Heavy rainfall on Sunday late night and early Monday has led to severe waterlogging in parts of Mumbai, disrupting traffic and flight and railway operations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, intense spells of rain and gusty winds at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai over the next three to four hours.

The southwest monsoon arrived in Maharashtra on Sunday, making it the earliest onset of the annual rainfall season over the state in 35 years, the weather department said. The monsoon is expected to advance to Mumbai, Bengaluru, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu during next three days.

The monsoon arrived over Kerala on Saturday, nearly a week ahead of the usual onset date of June 1.

Delhi May Witness Thunderstorms, Rain Through The Week: Weather Agency

Delhi is expected to witness cloudy skies, thunderstorms, and rain throughout this week, the weather department, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its weekly forecast. Gusty winds measuring up to 30-50 kmph, reaching up to even 60 kmph are also expected.

Kemps Corner Road In South Mumbai Repaired, Operations Resume

A part of Kemps Corner Road in South Mumbai, which collapsed this morning amid heavy rain, has been repaired. Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Maharashtra's Minister of Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, confirmed, along with pictures from the ground.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mr Lodha said the issue of road collapse has been addressed on "war footing and resolved".

"The road is now operational without any hassle. We are here to serve the people—swiftly, sincerely, and always," he wrote.  

Kemps Corner is a posh neighborhood in South Mumbai. It's located at the intersection of Breach Candy, Warden Road, Pedder Road, and Nepean Sea Road.

Thane-Palghar Rains: Bridge In Kalyan Closed

Thane and Palghar districts received heavy rainfall on Monday, prompting authorities to close some key roads and relocate residents from vulnerable areas, officials said. Kalyan Tehsildar Sachin Shejal said traffic on Raite bridge along Kalyan-Murbad road has been halted due to rising water levels of the Ulhas river.

"Although the water has not gone over the bridge level, we have decided to close it as a precautionary measure. Traffic has been diverted via Titwala. In Ambernath, 50 residents of Swabhiman Chali, located near the banks of the Ulhas river in Sonivali, were relocated to BSUP Buildings 26, 27 and 28. No such evacuation was required elsewhere in the district," Shejal said.

A Roundup Of Rain-Induced Damage In Mumbai

Heavy rain in Mumbai since last night has caused severe damage to lives and livelihoods. This includes:

  • One person died due to lightning in Raigad.
  • Twenty-five houses have partially collapsed in Baramati and seven people trapped in the flood have been rescued. 70 to 80 families have been shifted to safer places. Mobile services remained disrupted yesterday. Now they are being restored.
  • Two people have been rescued from the flood situation in Indapur.
  • Thirty citizens were stranded near Dudhebavi village. They have been provided with accommodation and food facilities.
  • Six citizens were stranded in floods in Malshiras taluka, in Maharashtra's Solapur district. They have been shifted to a safe place.
  • Three people are stranded in the Bhima River in Pandharpur. The rescue operation is on.

One Dead, 48 Rescued As Heavy Rain Hit Maharashtra

One person died in a lightning strike in Raigad, while 48 people were rescued from inundated areas as heavy rains battered several places in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, on Monday, the office of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.

“Pune, Satara, Solapur, Raigad, Mumbai and MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region) have received heavy rainfall. Daund received 117 mm of rain in 24 hours, Baramati 104.75 mm, while 63.25 mm was recorded in Indapur,” the statement said.

It said 25 houses partially collapsed in Baramati, while seven persons trapped in flooded areas were rescued.

“70 to 80 families have been shifted to safer places. Mobile services that were disrupted yesterday are now being restored,” the CM’s Office said.

‘Venture out only if necessary’: Maha Dy CM amid heavy rains alert

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the Mumbai Police in separate appeals on Monday urged the Mumbaikars to stay at home and venture out if necessary, especially after heavy rains lashed the metropolis. Mr Shinde visited the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) control room and took stock of the situation.

“BMC and various other government agencies, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, SDRF and NDRF, are working together as a team in disaster management and relief work,” Mr Shinde said.

Mr Shinde said that drain cleaning is being done with the help of robots.

Monsoon Arrives In Mumbai, Earliest Onset In 75 Years, Says Weather Office

The southwest monsoon made its onset over Mumbai on Monday, more than a fortnight before its normal date, with India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials saying it is the earliest arrival of rains in the country's financial capital in 75 years.

IMD scientist Sushma Nair said the southwest monsoon arrived in Mumbai on May 29 in 1956. It arrived on the same date in 1962 and 1971.

Four-day Rain Forecast For Telangana Ahead Of Monsoon

Ahead of the arrival of the Southwest monsoon in Telangana, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain in many parts of the state over the next four days. Light to moderate rain or thunder showers are very likely to occur at many places over Telangana, the IMD said.

A yellow alert has been issued for many districts till May 29. Heavy rains are likely at isolated places in the districts of the north Telangana region.

The weather is cloudy in most parts of the state, making the conditions favourable for the onset of monsoon. According to meteorologists, monsoon may enter the state by month end or in the first week of June.

Newly Inaugurated Worli Underground Metro Station Flooded

The Worli underground metro station in Mumbai was flooded as Monsoon arrived early in the financial capital. Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rainfall, which started last night and continued till morning, resulting in waterlogging in parts of the city and traffic congestion. The visuals from the ground show the Worli underground metro station inundated following incessant rain in Mumbai. The water reached not just the gates of the station but also the platforms, waiting to enter the metro.

Several videos show the platform completely flooded with muddy water. The passengers were seen wading through the water with folded pants and slippers.

Karnataka's Coastal Area On Red Alert; NDRF And SDRF Teams On Alert

Heavy monsoon rains continue to lash Karnataka's coastal belt for the third consecutive day, disrupting normal life in Dakshina Kannada district, prompting authorities to issue a red alert and deploy disaster response teams.

The red alert for coastal Karnataka will remain in force for the next five days, the IMD said.

Given the current situation, a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been stationed in Puttur, and two State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in Mangaluru and Subrahmanya. Officials have been directed to remain on high alert.

Mumbai Rain: Central Railway's Harbour Line Affected

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Monday morning, leading to the suspension of suburban train services between Vadala Road and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) on Central Railway's Harbour line from 10:25 am, while waterlogging was reported from several areas in the metropolis.

Tracks were inundated at Masjid, Byculla, Dadar, Matunga and Badlapur railway stations on Central Railway, delaying trains in the morning rush hours, leaving commuters distressed.

A part of a road in South Mumbai collapsed, resulting in restricted traffic movement. This is a fallout of incessant rain in Mumbai, which started Sunday night and continues right now. The heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and traffic disruptions.

A part of Mumbai's Kemps Corner Road collapsed on Monday morning amid heavy rain in the financial capital. Kemps Corner is a posh neighborhood in South Mumbai. It's located at the intersection of Breach Candy, Warden Road, Pedder Road, and Nepean Sea Road.

The road has been closed near Warden Collection for all vehicles coming from Kemps Corner towards Mukesh Chowk.

Heavy downpour continued to cause damage in the northern districts of Kerala, where people were shifted to relief camps and safer locations in many places. In Karnataka's Belagavi district, a three-year-old girl died after a wall of her house collapsed due to continuous rain. The three-year-old Keerthila Nagesh Pujari was sleeping when the incident happened. The incident was reported from the Mahalingeshwar Colony of Gokak town, Belagavi district.

The rear wall of the house gave way and collapsed on the child while she was sleeping, leading to her death on the spot. Her four-year-old sister sustained injuries and has been admitted to a local hospital.

The two sisters were sleeping in one room, while their parents were in another. The wall collapsed in the early hours of the morning.

An orange alert has been sounded for the national capital, Delhi, with rain and thunderstorms forecast. The orange alert, a part of the IMD's weather warning system, means that residents should be alert and ready for potentially disruptive weather. 

Parts of Delhi received light showers early in the morning, with the minimum temperature dropping to 25.2 degrees Celsius, 1.4 degrees below the seasonal average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Overnight and continuing morning rain has brought Mumbai to a standstill, leaving several areas of the city waterlogged and disrupting transport and flight services. Many low-lying areas in Kurla, Sion, Dadar, and Parel were largely affected, with visuals showing vehicles moving through the waterlogged streets early today.

Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rainfall and waterlogging in some parts of the city since last week. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents of Mumbai not to step out of their homes unless necessary. Additionally, the BMC and the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) have identified 96 buildings in the city that are considered dangerous during the rainy season, and around 3,100 residents have been instructed to shift to safer places.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'yellow' alert for heavy rainfall throughout the day in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts. An 'orange' alert for very heavy rainfall has been issued in Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. According to the weather office, there is a possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rains with strong winds at a speed of 50-60 km per hour in some districts across Maharashtra in the next three to four hours.

The state administration has appealed to citizens to remain alert.
