The attack, in which Mr Raghuvanshi died, was a plan hatched by his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, her lover Raj Kushwaha and others while the couple were on their honeymoon in Meghalaya.

The couple went missing on May 23 while on their honeymoon in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills. The man's body as found in a gorge on June 2, while the woman was missing.

They were last seen by a tourist guide Albert Pde in Mawlakhiat along with three men around 10 am as they went on a 3,000-step route to Nongriat, home to the double-decker living roots bridge which is a widely-acclaimed tourist spot. Raghuvanshi's body was found in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. A gold ring and a neck chain were found missing from his body, further leading to suspicion that he was murdered.A day later, a bloodstained machete was found nearby, and two days later, a raincoat that was similar to the one used by the couple was found in Mawkma village, halfway between Sohrarim and the gorge where Raghuvanshi's body was found.

On May 24, the scooter, which they had hired on May 22 and used to travel till Mawlakhiat, was found abandoned at a cafe along the road from Shillong to Sohra, following which the search for them began.

After their marriage on May 11, the couple had left for Meghalaya on May 20 for their honeymoon.

Weeks after the murder, Sonam Raghuvanshi was found in the night at Kashi Dhaba situated on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road, from where she was sent to Sadar Hospital for treatment then a one-stop centre for assistance to women. Sonam Raghuvanshi surrendered before the Nandganj Police Station in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur on Sunday, while three other assailants were arrested in overnight raids.
