The government is planning to sue e-commerce giants for selling products that are not certified, sources have said. Firms like Myntra, Meesho, Bigbasket, Amazon, Flipkart are likely to face legal action. The move comes after the Bureau of Indian Standards or BIS found non-certified products being sold across these platforms afer a series of raids held in March.
The BIS had conducted multiple raids at Flipkart and Amazon warehouses, sources said. Its inspectors uncovered over 11,000 products including toys, kitchen appliances, electrical equipment -- all lacking the mandatory BIS certification.
The BIS is now in the process of filing legal cases under the BIS Act 2016 in a magistrate court.
Under the law, the companies can face penalties up to 10 times the value of non-compliant goods sold, and imprisonment for up to two years.
In March, BIS had filed two legal cases against Techvision International Pvt, a key supplier of non-certified products, for violating norms.
NDTV awaits responses from all the five firms mentioned.
