A man who was under trial was strangled by two prisoners inside the lock-up of the Saket District Court in Delhi over a past rivalry. The victim, Aman, was taken to the hospital but was declared dead.
Delhi Police said the two fellow inmates, also undertrials lodged in Tihar Jail No. 8, attacked Aman while awaiting court proceedings.
The incident took place earlier today when a group of prisoners was brought to the court for scheduled hearings. While they were being held in the lockup, a fight broke out, and Aman was attacked by Jitender and Jaidev inside the lockup.
Preliminary inquiry indicates that the attack stemmed from a previous dispute. In 2024, Aman allegedly assaulted Jitender and his brother with a knife.
"This is a condemnable incident. It raises serious questions about the court's security. A fight broke out between three inmates. No weapon was involved. Aman's head hit the wall, and that's how he died. The police are doing a detailed investigation. Things are normal now," Bar Association President Anil Basoya said.
The Delhi Police said the situation is now under control, and further investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the brawl.
The body was sent for post-mortem, and a case of murder is being registered. Further investigation is underway.
