The Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration recently conducted raids at factories producing paneer in Gorakhpur and units manufacturing packaged drinking water in Gautam Buddha Nagar. On May 26, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) shared a post on X, revealing that a large quantity of fake paneer had been confiscated and destroyed following food safety checks in Gorakhpur. Officials said 2,500 kg of adulterated paneer and 800 litres of contaminated milk were destroyed during the raids.

More than 10 samples collected from the units are currently undergoing testing. Authorities also seized large quantities of harmful substances, including synthetic colours and saccharin. For those unaware, saccharin is a white, crystalline artificial sweetener. The FSSAI has launched an investigation into the factories involved in the production of the adulterated paneer.

Samples under testing; harmful substances like synthetic colours and saccharin were seized. Ensuring what you eat is safe."

In a follow-up update on May 29, FSSAI said that the UP Food Safety Administration had also launched an investigation into bottled water manufacturing in Gautam Buddha Nagar. Officials seized 13,076 litres of fake packaged drinking water and sealed two units. According to the food safety team, the units were operating without valid FSSAI licences. The counterfeit water was being sold under labels such as 'Bilseri' and 'Blesri', which closely resembled the branding of the popular brand 'Bisleri'. Samples from both plants have been sent for laboratory testing.

Authorities have urged consumers to buy food products such as paneer, milk, and packaged water only from trusted sources. Shoppers should carefully inspect packaging and labels before purchasing any such items.
