Vishal Bhardwaj won the Best Adapted Screenplay for Talvar.
This is Mr Bhardwaj's seventh National Award.
Mr Bhardwaj is currently filming Rangoon.
Mr Bhardwaj had also won the Best Screenplay (Dialogue) Award last year for Haider.
"This is my seventh National Award. I am very happy that this time it's for a film like Talvar, a story which needed to be told. This is my second film alone as a writer. So, it gives me confidence, a boost to write," Mr Bhardwaj told PTI.
The 50-year-old filmmaker, who is currently filming Rangoon, said that he will celebrate the win with his team.
"Initially, when my producer told me about the award, I couldn't believe it. I wanted to hear it on TV and see it myself. The congratulatory messages made me feel it's true. In the evening, I will party with my team," added Mr Bhardwaj.(Also Read: Meghna Gulzar: Talvar Will Serve its Purpose If it Leads to a Debate)
