Vidya Balan On Why Indian Culture Considers Sex Taboo

New Delhi: Actress Vidya Balan, who is all set for her upcoming film Tumhari Sulu, in which she features as a host of a late night radio show, says that Indian culture wants people to be sexual only in the institution of marriage and for reproduction, reports news agency IANS. The 38-year-old actress' message for everyone is 'sex is a feeling, not a taboo.' "It feels funny how inspite of being the most populated country in the world, we still don't talk about sex openly. The idea of sex is looked down by people because Indian culture wants us to be sexual only in the institution of marriage, for purposes of procreation. But the whole feeling, the joy of intimacy, pleasure and fun is missing," IANS quoted Vidya Balan as saying.

Vidya Balan, who recently shot a video titled Taboo, feels that it is time to "re-look" at the attitude towards sex. Of this, she told IANS: "We must strive for a traditional and yet modern balance, and aim for the hypocrisy related to sex to go away. Our children need to know that sex is a feeling, not a taboo."

Vidya Balan made her acting debut with TV show Hum Paanch. She is best known for her films like Parineeta, Paa, Kahaani and The Dirty Picture, for which she also won the National Film Award for Best Actress.

Vidya Balan will now star in Tumhari Sulu, the promotions of which are in full swing. The film's story revolves around a middle-aged housemaker Sulochona aka Sulu, who is a happy-go-lucky person with a mantra: "Sometimes you don't need wings to fly."

Directed by Suresh Triveni, Tumhari Sulu will hit the theatres on November 17th.
