Today's Big Release: Judi Dench And Ali Fazal's Victoria And Abdul

New Delhi: It's an important day for actor Ali Fazal because his first ever Hollywood feature Victoria And Abdul arrives in theatres today. Victoria And Abdul is directed by Stephen Frears and is based on Queen Victoria (played by Judi Dench) indeed but highlights an important chapter from the pages of her diary. Victoria And Abdul beautifully documents the Queen's unusual rapport with her aide, Abdul Karim - an Indian Muslim. The movie premiered in Venice last month with a section of movie buffs highlighting the movie's treatment of racism. Speaking to news agency AFP, the director quipped: "It was always meant to be funny. I thought, 'What film would Donald Trump most like to see?'."

A glimpse of what Victoria And Abdul has to offer can be found in what The Washington Post has to say about the period piece: "As this cheeky colonial comedy opens, the widowed Queen Victoria is sluggishly pushing through her last decade. She is cranky and bored, but her eyes and appetite perk up when she meets her new special delivery, a handsome Indian Muslim subject turned servant named Abdul Karim."

Victoria And Abdul is said to be a sequel of sorts to John Madden's Mrs Brown, in which Judi Dench had played the Queen and the movie portrayed the Queen's relationship with the titular gamekeeper.

That's not it. We also have Sattwik Mohanty's Ranchi Diaries opening to screens today. Ranchi Diaries has been produced by veteran actor Anupam Kher, who also stars in the movie. The movie also stars Soundarya Sharma, Jimmy Shergill, Satish Kaushik and Himansh Kohli in important roles.
