Prime Minister Narendra Modi became one of the first leaders in the world to congratulate Mark Carney and his Liberal Party for winning Canada's parliamentary elections. This marks the first gesture or acknowledgement from the Indian government towards Canada since the strained bilateral ties left by the Justin Trudeau administration.

With Trudeau stepping down last month, giving way to Mark Carney, the latter said that are opportunities to mend the ties with India, who he said is an important ally. He had said last month that should he remain prime minister after the federal polls in April, he will seek to improve ties with New Delhi.

The Liberal Party, which has now been elected for a third consecutive term in office, will have to make a significant shift in policies laid out by Justin Trudeau in its endeavour to fix the Canada-India relationship.

The Liberal Party has won the federal election in Canada, culminating a process marked by US President Donald Trump threats on a trade war and of making the country the 51st American state. With this result, the Liberal Party's leader and current prime minister, Mark Carney, will remain in the job, and will form a new government with a new cabinet.

It's still unclear if the liberals will have a majority in the Parliament or whether they will need to look for alliances with other parties.

The next primer minister and his government will have to address both external and internal challenges. Externally, the main one will be to manage a recently tense relationship with the United States, after President Donald Trump has been threatening Canada with steep tariffs and demands that Canada should become the 51st state.

Internally, the new government will still have to deal with issues like rising food and housing prices and a surge in immigration. (PTI)

The results in Canada are an extraordinary comeback for the Liberals, who at the start of the year looked headed for an electoral wipeout. Beijing on Tuesday stopped short of congratulating Carney, but said: "China's position on China-Canada relations is consistent and clear."

Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially won a set in parliament for the first time after Elections Canada declared him a winner from Nepean, Ontario. 

 Till now, Carney had never held elected office before. He won the Nepean set with 64 per cent vote, defeating Conservative Barbara Baland NDP's Shyam Shukla.

Mark Carney in his address said Canada would “never” yield to the United States as he declared victory in federal elections on Tuesday. In a rebuke to Trump's threats, the Liberal Party leader promised to “represent everyone who calls Canada home.”

“As I have been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. But these are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never ever happen," Carney said.

Canada's Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat on Tuesday in the country's election and promised to work with the Liberal government in countering US President Donald Trump's trade war and annexation threats. 

"We will always put Canada first," Poilievre told supporters in Canada's capital, adding: "Conservatives will work with the prime minister and all parties with the common goal of defending Canada's interests and getting a new trade deal that puts these tariffs behind us while protecting our sovereignty."

New Democratic Party (NDP) chief Jagmeet Singh, known to be a pro-Khalistan leader, on Tuesday resigned after he failed to retain his seat in the Canadian elections.

Jagmeet Singh, leader of left leaning New Democratic party (NDP), may lose his seat in Burnaby Central. Early trends place him on the third place, trailing on 19 per cent, behind the Liberals’ Wade Chang and the Conservatives’ James Yan.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has conceded defeat and congratulated Prime Minister Mark Carney on his projected victory in Canada election 2025. However, Poilievre noted that he would be leader of a minority government and also appeared to rule out stepping down as Conservative leader, despite leading his party to an election loss that was unexpected just months ago.

“It will be an honour to continue to fight for you and be a champion for your cause as we go forward,” he told supporters, according to a report by The Guardian.

“We gained well over 20 seats, we got the highest vote share our party has received since 1988," he added.

After his National Democratic Party's poor performance in Canada Election 2025, Jameet Singh announced he will step down from the post of party leader as soon as another leader is found to replace him. 

Addressing supporters from riding in Burnaby Central, Singh acknowledged his party did not do as well as hoped in Monday’s election but said, “We are only defeated if we stop fighting.”

“We’re only defeated when we believe that those that tell us that we can never dream of a better Canada, a fairer Canada, a more compassionate Canada,” he added, according to an Aljazeera report.

Canadian broadcasters CBC and CTV are projecting that Mark Carney’s Liberals will win the election, but it was not yet clear if they would hold a majority in parliament. 

At present, both CTV and CBC is predicting 163 seats for Liberals. That’s nine seats short of the 172 seats needs to form a majority government.

In case the Liberals get a minority victory, then Carney would either have to negotiate with other opposition legislators for support or dare to form a government alone at risk of it being toppled by other parties.

In terms of partners, Liberals first choice would have been left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Jagmeet Singh. But NDP is currently projected to win just 7 seats and Carney would still seen the support of two more MPs to form a majority government. 

The second choice for liberals is Yves-François Blanchet-led Bloc Québécois, who are projected to win 23 seats.

The Liberals and Conservatives both want to cut taxes for people in the lowest tax bracket. The Liberals plan to lower taxes by 1%, while the Conservatives want to reduce the tax rate from 15% to 12.75%.

Mark Carney,  who also had a lucrative career as investment banker before joining Canada's public service, replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister last month. He had never held elected office and had previously served as central bank governor in both Britain and Canada. 

Carney, 60, persuaded voters his global financial experience has prepared him to guide Canada through a trade war and promised to expand overseas trading relations to curb Canada's reliance on the United States. 

Carney's descriptions of the US President Donald Trump threat have been stark. 

"Donald Trump wants to break us so America can own us," he said during the campaign.

"They want our resources, they want our water, they want our land, they want our country. They can't have it."
