Canada Election Results 2025 LIVE Updates: Prime Minister Mark Carney-led Liberal party won Canada's election on Monday, according to local media projections. The public broadcaster CBC and CTV News both projected the Liberals would form Canada's next government, but it was not yet clear if they would hold a majority in parliament. Liberals got a fourth consecutive term--a rarity in Canadian politics-- after Carney convinced voters that his experience managing economic crises prepared him to confront US President Donald Trump.

The American President's trade war and threats to annexe Canada, which he renewed in an election day social media post, outraged Canadians and made dealing with the United States a top campaign issue. Carney, 60, who had never held elected office and only replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister last month, anchored his campaign on an anti-Trump message.

He previously served as central bank governor in both Britain and Canada and persuaded voters that his global financial experience has prepared him to guide Canada through a trade war. Carney has promised to expand overseas trading relations to curb Canada's reliance on the United States.

Trudeau's departure was also crucial to the Liberal win, which capped one of the most dramatic turnarounds in Canadian political history.

Canada Election Results: Liberals Won Election. Here's What Comes Next

The Liberal Party has won the federal election in Canada, culminating a process marked by US President Donald Trump threats on a trade war and of making the country the 51st American state. With this result, the Liberal Party's leader and current prime minister, Mark Carney, will remain in the job, and will form a new government with a new cabinet.

It's still unclear if the liberals will have a majority in the Parliament or whether they will need to look for alliances with other parties.

The next primer minister and his government will have to address both external and internal challenges. Externally, the main one will be to manage a recently tense relationship with the United States, after President Donald Trump has been threatening Canada with steep tariffs and demands that Canada should become the 51st state.

Internally, the new government will still have to deal with issues like rising food and housing prices and a surge in immigration. (PTI)

Canada Election Results Live: What Happens If Liberals Don't Get A Majority?

Canadian broadcasters CBC and CTV are projecting that Mark Carney’s Liberals will win the election, but it was not yet clear if they would hold a majority in parliament.

At present, both CTV and CBC is predicting 163 seats for Liberals. That’s nine seats short of the 172 seats needs to form a majority government.

In case the Liberals get a minority victory, then Carney would either have to negotiate with other opposition legislators for support or dare to form a government alone at risk of it being toppled by other parties.

In terms of partners, Liberals first choice would have been left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Jagmeet Singh. But NDP is currently projected to win just 7 seats and Carney would still seen the support of two more MPs to form a majority government.

The second choice for liberals is Yves-François Blanchet-led Bloc Québécois, who are projected to win 23 seats.

Prime Minister Mark Carney won Canada's election Monday, local media projected, leading his Liberal Party to a new term in power after convincing voters his experience managing economic crises prepared him to confront US President Donald Trump. The public broadcaster CBC and other outlets projected the Liberals would form Canada's next government, but it was not yet clear if they would hold a majority in parliament.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre fell short of becoming prime minister, but his party was on track to form a strong opposition in parliament. Trump's trade war and threats to annex Canada, which he renewed in an election day social media post, outraged Canadians and made dealing with the United States a top campaign issue.

Carney, who had never held elected office and only replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister last month, anchored his campaign on an anti-Trump message. He previously served as central bank governor in both Britain and Canada and persuaded voters his global financial experience has prepared him to guide Canada through a trade war. (AFP)
