Islamic Leader On Death Row In Bangladesh For 1971 War Crimes Acquitted

Bangladesh's Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence of senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam in a high-profile war crimes case. Mr Islam has been cleared of charges tied to atrocities during the country's 1971 Liberation War against Pakistan. He had been sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal on multiple counts, including genocide, murder, and rape. Lawyers said the top court found that the verdict had been delivered without proper evaluation of evidence. Asif Nazrul, who is the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government's law adviser, welcomed the acquittal, calling it the outcome of last year's student-led movement that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League regime on August 5.
