Four people were killed after a bridge on a river near Pune collapsed on Sunday afternoon. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced financial aid for families of those killed in the bridge collapse. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said that "a structural audit of all such bridges" will be conducted.

This area is a popular tourist destination and was crowded at the time of the incident. Residents had reportedly raised concerns earlier about the structural safety of the bridge, but many tourists were unaware of the potential danger. The strong flow of water, worsened by the flooding, may have contributed to the collapse.

Maharashtra Minister Makarand Patil on Sunday said that the bridge collapsed after "people flocked on the bridge".

Maharashtra Minister Makarand Patil said, "Till now, injured people have been admitted to the (Civil) hospital. The rescue operation is going on in full swing. NDRF and SDRF have come here for the same, along with volunteering organisations and locals. This bridge was restricted for people and two-wheelers, but people were excited for monsoon tourism, many tourists flocked to the bridge, and it collapsed."

Talegaon Dabhade police station senior inspector Pradeep Rayannawar said, "While two bodies were recovered from beneath the structure, two persons died of injuries during treatment after being rescued."

The collapsed bridge was old, and work orders have been issued for a new bridge. Additionally, instructions have been given to conduct structural audits on all bridges over the river in the state. This accident will be thoroughly investigated, and action will be taken against those responsible. No one will be spared," he said.

Heavy rains had raised water levels in the Indrayani river at the site of the bridge collapse. Local police, fire brigade, and NDRF teams rushed to the site and launched a rescue operation.

A crane has been pressed into service as efforts continue to remove parts of the collapsed structure amid rescue operations. Visuals from the scene show sections of the bridge, mostly directly over the waters, have broken down and fallen into the river while rescue personnel from various agencies worked to locate and rescue the victims.
