Ahmedabad Plane Crash Live Updates: A London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday, killing 241 people on board. Only one person survived.

This was the country's worst air disaster in recent times. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among those killed in the crash. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site to take stock of the situation.

Officials said flight AI 171 lost altitude soon after taking off at around 1.30pm, before crashing into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College doctors in Meghaninagar area and combusting in a fiery blaze that sent plumes of thick black smoke spiralling up in the air. The pilot had issued a 'Mayday' distress call, denoting a full emergency, soon after takeoff, the Air Traffic Control at Ahmedabad said.

Aviation experts said that going by the available visuals, lack of thrust in both engines and a bird hit could be among the probable causes. Visuals from the wreckage area showed bodies being pulled out and the injured, many with burns, wheeled into the city civil hospital close by.

The Centre has formed a high-level committee to probe the crash, Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu said.

What Does A Black Box Do?

The black box comprises two devices - the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and the flight data recorder (FDR).

The cockpit voice recorder collects radio transmissions and sounds such as the pilot's voices and engine noises, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)'s website. Depending on what happened, investigators may pay close attention to the engine noise, stall warnings and other clicks and pops, the NTSB said. And from those sounds, investigators can often determine engine speed and the failure of some systems.

The flight data recorder monitors a plane's altitude, airspeed and heading, according to the NTSB. Those factors are among at least 88 parameters that newly built planes must monitor.

'1206' Was Ex Chief Minister Vijay Rupani's 'Lucky' Number, Until It Wasn't

The number '1206' was never just a number for former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani. It was a constant across the decades of his public and private life. It featured on the number plates of his vehicles, be it a scooter in his early days, or the official car of a Chief Minister. For the long-serving BJP leader, '1206' stood for good fortune. Until it wasn't.

On June 12, 2025, that number, in a cruel twist of fate, became the day of his death.

Mr Rupani, 68, was among the 242 people on board Air India Flight AI171, which crashed moments after take-off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport en route to London's Gatwick Airport. He was travelling to London to visit his wife and daughter. He never made it.

The crash occurred on the 12th day of the 6th month - 12/06 - which friends, family, and party colleagues say was a personal emblem for Mr Rupani.

Air India Crash, Ahmedabad, AI 171: Lack Of Lift, Pilots Yanking Yoke: What May Have Happened In Plane's Cockpit

Based on an analysis of the video, experts said the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a model that had an immaculate safety record, took off from the runway at Ahmedabad and experienced meagre thrust soon after.

The pilots, experts said, would have been yanking the yoke at this time in an attempt to gain lift and altitude, and the video shows that the plane's landing gear was also down.

A "Mayday" call was issued after take-off, indicating the aircraft was in distress. Experts said that as the lift decayed, the pilots must have attempted to pull the nose of the plane up, but it kept descending.

Plane May Not Have Achieved Optimum Take-Off Speed Due To Bird Hit: Experts

A bird hit may have prevented the Air India flight, which crashed near Ahmedabad airport, from achieving the optimum speed for take-off, leading to the crash, experts have told NDTV.

Air India flight 171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick airport in London crashed around 1.30 pm on Thursday, shortly after taking off. There were 242 people on board - 230 passengers, 10 crew members and two pilots - the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

Captain Saurabh Bhatnagar, former senior pilot, said, "It looks, prima facie, like a case of multiple bird hits wherein both the engines have lost power. The take-off was perfect and just, I believe, short of taking the gear up, the aircraft started descending, which can happen only in case the engine loses power or the aircraft stops developing lift. Obviously, the investigation will reveal the exact reason."

"From the footage, it seems that the take-off was uneventful. The aircraft came down in a controlled fashion. The pilot had given the Mayday call, which means that it was a distress situation," he stressed. READ MORE HERE
