Kundan Shah, Director Of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Dies At 69

New Delhi: Director Kundan Shah, best-known for making iconic satire Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, died of a heart attack in his Mumbai home this morning, report news agencies PTI and ANI. Mr Shah was 69 and would have been 70 later this month. Mr Shah, a graduate of Pune's Film and Television Institute of India, worked in both film and television and directed actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Shah Rukh Khan and Om Puri. Kundan Shah passed away after suffering a heart attack, sources close to the family told PTI.

His friend and colleague Satish Shah, who played one of the principal characters in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, told PTI, "I just got to know about Shah's demise. I have reached his house. It is really sad."

Bollywood celebrities have filmmaker have paid their condolences for Kundan Shah.

1983's Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron was Kundan Shah's debut and featured a cast of some of Indian cinema's finest talent, from Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri to Ravi Baswani, Pankaj Kaput, Satish Shah and Neena Gupta. Mr Shah's next projects were in television - Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Nukkad, Wagle Ki Duniya and others.

In 1993, 10 years after his debut, Kundan Shah directed Shah Rukh Khan in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. The cast included Suchitra Krishnamoorthy, Deepak Tijori and Ashutosh Gowariker and the film won several awards.


Kundan Shah's other film credits include Kya Kehna, starring Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan and Chandrachur Singh, Hum To Mohabbat Karega and Dil Hai Tumhara.
